Alumni Meet Up - 03/07/2021 - Haut-Kœnigsbourg Castle
The Haut-Kœnigsbourg Castle is a typical monument of Alsace with a half million of visitors each year, so it seemed natural to start the Alumni Meet Ups there.
For this Saturday, the July 3rd 2021, we were 3, two promo 2017 and one 2018, but surely the best and the most motivated with a 2017 who did 10,000 km to join. As initially planned, we did a carpooling from Strasbourg and stopped at Sélestat, at the feet of the Castle, around noon to eat. We went to the best Italian in town, because the boss had more records than Ronaldo, in French and world Pizzaiolo tournaments: 2012, 2015, 2017, 2019… It was hard to miss because the records were literally on all the walls. Yet it was legitimate. One of the participant certified that she “ate the best pizza in her life”. Being to heavy to walk in Sélestat, we directly went to the Castle.
The Haut-Kœnigsbourg Castle stood proudly above the Alsace Plain. We arrived just in time to do a guided tour. We learned the history of the Castle, rebuilt at the beginning of the XXth Century by the Kaiser William II (Guillaume II in French). It was a museum for the glory of the German emperor and not a defensive castle. The guide had an interesting humor. It told us that William II made the keep of the castle higher than the previous castle in ruins and presented many hunting trophies, that we could observe in the rooms, maybe to compensate something. Not what you would think of, because he had seven children, but likely his atrophied arm, that apparently did not disable his hunting skills according to what the emperor showed. In any case, it was nice to see this monument and look at hundred of kilometers of the landscape. We finally left the Castle at 4 pm, while the rain started to fall.
We hoped that this report will inspire you to join the next Alumni Meet up at the end of the year!
Looking forward to meet you again.
